Bands You've Seen In Concert Lately...

Last weekend--not this one--I got to see the Aquabats in concert. It was a wonderfully fun all-ages show. The Aquabats schtick is that they pretend to have superhero powers, and every show they fight a different supervillain. This time they kept Cobra Man from launching a missile at the venue.

Crowded House at Foxwoods Resort & Casino!

They were tha awesome! From my write up:

I just got back from Foxwoods, where I saw Crowded House kick off their ‘Time on Earth’ tour. All I can say is, wow!

I haven’t been to a concert in about five years and I have to say, the music was fantastic! While they played a few songs from their new album (which is great, go pick it up), they really went back to the old stuff. “Don’t Dream It’s Over”, “Pineapple Head”, “Weather With You”, and “Fall at Your Feet” were all played with the last two songs involving audience participation.

I have to say, it wasn’t a typical concert venue. It was a small little theater. This was a much smaller affair, which I think allowed the band to goof off a bit. At one point, they ordered fish and chips along with a few Mojitos. Taking a few bites, they then offered the platter to the crowd and to my surprise, people didn’t rush for it. They just walked up to the stage, took a french fry and walked back to to their seat and sat down.

Twice Neil Finn stopped a song either because of laughing, or he started in the wrong key. I thought it was particularly lovely because it showed that rock stars can be just regular guys and not untouchable Gods. So what could have been just a night of listening to live music, turned into a great experience! It felt like I had invited the band into my living room, joked with them between songs and then got swept away in the magic of the lyrics and melody.

Go see these guys if you get the chance. You will not be disappointed.

Walking out of the casino 13 dollars richer didn’t hurt my enjoyment of the evening either.

Most recently, Rush at the Red Rocks Ampitheatre. Because it's always a good day to see Rush.

Most recent concert was the Honda Civic Tour, featuring Cobra Starship, The Academy Is..., Paul Wall, +44 and Fall Out Boy at Pine Knob outside Detroit. It was an excellent show.
Also, I recently saw the Psychedelic Furs at the same venue. They're still alive and kickin'.

The last band I saw was Rancid at Columbus' Newport Concert Hall, or whatever they're calling that gorgeously decrepit theater these days. Pure. Punk. Genius.

I'm debating about buying tickets for my first show in California - The Decemberists are doing two-night stands on this tour. Night one is "The Long of It," where the set will be comprised only of songs greater than eight minutes in length. Night two is "The Short of It," and you can probably figure that out.

I think I'm going to see "The Short of It."

Spousal Unit and i caught Great Big Sea at the end of july. A good concert, but not quite up to their usual standard. They seemed strangely disoriented to be playing at the zoo and kept asking, "We're in Seattle! Wait, are we 'in' Seattle? Is it correct to say that 'we're in Seattle'?" Yes, you goof, because the zoo is right smack in the middle of Seattle! Also, the giraffe thing got tired early. Ah, well -- still well worth the cost of the tickets to have a nice picnic while listening to one of the few bands that S.U. and i agree upon.

Antibalasat The Space Gallery in Portland. Awesome. Ig you like Fela and Afrobeat - shit, if you like good music - then go see them. They tour all the time and their new album is teh awesomeness!!!

RUSH - Xcel Center in St Paul. Louder than hell, great light show and special song introductions from Doug & Bob McKenzie, and the kids from South Park. It takes a lot of brass to play 9 songs from your latest album but these guys pulled it off.

I saw them in Denver (noted above), and loved them, as always. I especially enjoyed the introduction video and the rotisserie chicken on the stage.

I saw them here in Dallas last month. The South Park intro to "Tom Sawyer" was hilarious.

I was a tad bummed that they played so many songs off the new album. I would've liked to have heard more of the older classics. Though it really is a no win situation when you have as much of a back catalog of music as these guys.

last concert I was at was Stephen Kellogg/Carbon Leaf/Pat McGee Band at Wolftrap here in Virginia. it was really good. Carbon Leaf may be my favorite band now.

I saw RUSH back in June when they played NOVA.

Such sweetness.

There needs to be a DVD for this tour. After watching some of the concert DVDs I had, these guys are on their game in a way they haven't been in a long time.

I'll be seeing Bruce Springsteen in Philadelphia a week from Friday.

Last concert I saw was Tears for Fears - a friend of mine is the drum-tech so we were able to hang out before and after as well - great band with finely crafted pop songs.

Rush is money. They simply don't have bad shows. I've seen them twice (The Gorge at George, and Fiddler's Green in Denver) and both times they were tight, joyful and rockin'. I'm bummed I don't live in Denver any more as the wife and I would have died to see them at Red Rocks on this most recent tour.

I was at the Fiddler's Green show, too. And saw their Anniversary Show at Red Rocks as well as Snakes and Arrows. Fabulous venue, if a bit of a hike.

Does anyone know what Alex's deal was with all those stuffed dinosaurs all over the stage?

Got taken to an Air Supply concert by my lady friend this summer. I was surprised at how many songs I remembered and how much I liked them. Just call me a refugee from the Eighties.

Oooh... we just saw Billy Joel a couple of weeks ago. He was absolutely awesome! Great show. Plus, he introduced himself, a nod to his greying, bald appearance, "This is Billy Joel's dad. Billy couldn't make it so I'm going to play for you."

There was this concert in London Monday night, a little underground band played a club called O2. I understand it well received by the small group of people who attended and I wish I had been there.
