Warren Ellis
Alan Moore
Brian Vaughan
Mike Carey
Bill Willingham
Grant Morrison

I don't read comics much anymore(too expensive). I'm old school. My favorites will probably always be Stan Lee, Peter David, and Roy Thomas.

Sometimes I really like one thing a writer does, and hate something else.

So...

Bill Willingham - Fables
Brian K. Vaughan - Runaways, Ex-Machina (but haven't been able to get into Y)
Phil & Kaja Foglio - Agatha Heterodyne, Girl Genius
J. Michael Straczynski - Rising Stars (but gave up on Supreme Powers)
Neil Gaiman

However, I've also read several comics that came highly recommended, saw why they were good, and didn't much like 'em at all.

true; Vaughan I became a fan with Swamp Thing and Y, but didn't much care for Ex Machina. I caught it at a time when I was really sick to death of more superhero riffs.

I liked Rising Stars, too, but never got the final issue so I have no idea what finally did happen. I'll probably pick up a back issue (hopefully) some day.

I HATE waiting, so I only get comics once they're properly graphic novels. Easier on me that way. And easier on my husband, since he has less hearing my gripe about how much I hate waiting.

Ex Machina has its ups and downs, but for the most part I really like where he's going with the story. But Runaways really is a current favorite (after Fables).

Rising Stars was one of one of the most fantastic comics I read--I think I may even like it better than Sandman, which was the first comic my friends found that I liked. And Visitations is well worth checking out. But I all but hated "Voices of the Dead and Bright". Just so you're warned. :)

Here are mine:

Peter O'Donnell
Stan Lee
Chris Claremont
Rumiko Takahashi
Kosuke Fujishima
Masakzu Katsura

The last three names not only write their own comics but are also the primary artists themselves.

Jim Starlin is #1 for me. I loved Dreadstar.

Chris Claremont is great. The ultimate in X-Men, for me

Neil Gaiman. The first time I read Sandman, I was totally blown away. For me, that was the first time I realized that comics could be "literature".

(I'm glad someone posted this, now I can put names to books. hurrah.)
Warren Ellis, almost always.
Bill Willingham definitely, Fables is excellent.
Brian K. Vaughan, again, Y and Ex Machina are both very smart.
Garth Ennis because .303 has to be one of the best books i've ever read about FP. And there's a lot of them about these days. (The individual who is assassinated at the end of it being assassinated before he can do what he has done makes it that much more piquant.)
Robert Kirkman, because I like Invincible best of all.

In the beginning, there was Stan Lee. There was light and it was good... nay, it was Excelsior!

Then came the Chris Claremont and the Marv Wolfman, and it was dark and challenging. But also fun and moving and well... family.

But then it became colder, grittier and Frank Miller showed me how much it could really hurt.

Finally there was Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman and my world was complete. For here was all things, for all times.
English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.
